Description
TopSec is an innovation project focused on waste management and the fight against climate change. It transforms organic waste into charcoal (biochar), which is used to create substrates for self-sustaining green roofs with no need for irrigation.
The aim of the project is to naturalise flat roofs and turn them into green or brown spaces that support urban biodiversity, improve water management, reduce environmental impact and contribute to carbon capture, while also improving the thermal insulation of buildings.
TopSec is part of the European Urban Initiative (EUI), a European Union programme that promotes urban innovation and the transfer of replicable solutions between cities, in line with the New Leipzig Charter and European priorities for the ecological transition.
The project is being implemented in four buildings in the metropolitan area of Barcelona and includes an educational programme to raise public awareness of the benefits of naturalised roofs and to promote more resilient and sustainable city models.
