Description

The project aims to contribute to guaranteeing the rights to health and protecting the refugee population on Lesbos (Greece), and in particular by improving the protection of the refugee population on the island of Lesbos against the COVID-19 pandemic and security incidents.

The project works in three areas:

1. Health in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic. Protocols for the prevention, detection and management of possible cases of COVID-19 have been developed and implemented, with a gender- and diversity-based approach, in order to adapt strategies and regulations to the refugee population, and especially those rendered most vulnerable by the situation.

2. Safety and fire prevention. The implementation in this area is focused on the Pikpa camp, which houses people requiring special support, such as those suffering from serious illnesses, victims of torture and violence, unaccompanied minors and pregnant women, among other groups.

3. Political advocacy and awareness-raising. Alongside the other two areas, work is being carried out with local and European institutions to obtain commitments and strategies for protection against COVID-19  and to ensure the human rights of the refugees. Work is also being done to raise awareness of the same issues among the island's population.

The beneficiaries of this project are the refugees currently on the island (21,000 people according to the Greek government), and especially those suffering from serious illnesses, victims of torture and violence, unaccompanied minors, large families with children, pregnant women and single-parent families.
