Description
Extreme weather events are, and will increasingly become, more frequent in the Mediterranean region. In this context, the objective of the NBS4MED project is to advance climate change adaptation efforts in the region through the transfer and adaptation of proven technologies and practices, the activation of cooperation and public engagement mechanisms, and the development of common frameworks, methodologies and solutions aimed at increasing risk prevention and disaster resilience in the participating territories.
More specifically, the project pursues the following objectives:
- Improve planning capacity and the operational effectiveness of civil protection mechanisms in the project territories.
- Strengthen the capacity of participating territories to plan and coordinate climate change adaptation interventions (including green infrastructure to mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events and early warning systems).
- Test and validate place-based solutions addressing specific challenges faced by the project territories.
- Facilitate improvements in territorial and national policy frameworks and in policy implementation to enhance climate resilience in the project territories.
Within the metropolitan area, two actions will be implemented, both coordinated by the Climate Action Services Directorate. On the one hand, a pilot action will be carried out in Cerdanyola del Vallès consisting of the creation of a small urban forest. This pilot — which constitutes a nature-based solution — will be located in a metropolitan park managed by AMB (Parc del Turonet) and will form part of the park’s educational programme.
The objective of the intervention is to improve urban environmental conditions. Its implementation in Cerdanyola del Vallès will allow testing of this NBS which, in addition to significantly contributing to carbon sequestration, will promote water infiltration and storage, improve air quality and mitigate local heat stress effects. This pilot will enable testing of the solution and the generation of knowledge to facilitate its replication and scaling across other municipalities in the metropolitan area.
In addition, a catalogue of good practices on NBS will be developed and made available online. This document will be enriched with the experiences of project partners from across the Mediterranean region and will contribute to the development of a common Mediterranean decision-making framework for the design and implementation of NBS in urban areas.
This project is part of the Interreg NEXT MED Programme, which aims to foster cooperation between countries from the northern and southern Mediterranean.
