Description
The project contributes to securing the right to protection against losses due to disaster and to protecting the livelihoods of the local and refugee population in Haql El Aazimeh.
The Lebanese Red Cross is implementing a project to protect the population, their property and their livelihoods in coordination with the Municipal Council of Haql El Aazimeh, for the efficient management of floods caused by heavy rains. This is based on a two-pronged strategy:
- First, the municipality is provided with adequate infrastructure to mitigate the effects of flooding. Three dykes are built to mitigate the effects of flash floods, with a system of small canals to drain the water for use in irrigation. Canals will be constructed to improve the availability of irrigation water for crops in the municipality, which will have a positive impact on the livelihoods of the local population.
- Second, work is being done with citizens in the area to enhance their ability to cope with floods and natural disasters by means of educational and awareness-raising activities.
The beneficiary of this project is the local population of Haql el Aazimeh, amounting to around 2,000 people, including around 100 refugees, another 200 refugees working in agriculture in the municipality, and the 3,000 inhabitants of four villages located downstream.
