Development of a strategic solid waste recycling plan in northeast Syria

Imatge de la trobada

On 17 December 2020, the process of developing a strategic solid waste recycling plan began with a seminar featuring political and technical representatives from the Department of Municipalities and the Environment of the Jazira Region in northeast Syria, the technical team at the NGO Un Ponte Per and the AMB's Directorate for Waste Prevention and Management Services.

The AMB is providing support for this strategic project in the Syrian region on both an environmental and socio-economic level. The support comes as part of the project "Sanitary Waste Management and Recycling in Northeast Syria: Support for Municipalities and Health Infrastructure", implemented jointly by Un Ponte Per, the Kurdish Red Moon and the AMB, which is also the main financial backer, in direct coordination with local institutions in the region.

Initial cycle of workshops

The meeting, organised by the NGO Un Ponte Per, was the first in a series of virtual meetings and workshops that are due to take place between now and March with a view to developing a strategic solid waste recycling plan at municipal level in northeast Syria. It is also envisaged that the strategic recycling plan will incorporate a gender-based approach and offer support to women's cooperatives linked to the waste management sector.

In addition, a market study will also be conducted to gauge the demand for the recyclable materials retrieved from the selective collection carried out in the municipalities in northeast Syria.

Aside from developing the strategic plan, the project also provides support in the area of sanitary waste management in northeast Syria, continuing the collaborative efforts in which the AMB, Un Ponte Per and the Kurdish Red Moon have been engaged since 2018; efforts which have helped the AMB and its partner institutions gain a prominent position in this sector in the region.
