Solidarity and commitment: guaranteeing the rights of refugees and environmental rights

Lesvos Solidarity is an association that was founded in response to the massive influx of refugees to the Island of Lesvos sterted in 2015. This NGO operates in the Pikpa Camp, where it provides humanitarian aid to the most vulnerable refugees, families with children, pregnant women, disabled and ill people, or people with other serious problems.

Lesvos Solidarity also carries out solidarity and public awareness actions for the local population as well as refugees, which is why they have created the Mosaik Support Center in the centre of Mytilini.

The objective of this project is to contribute to strengthen the strategy of social recycling of waste originated due to the humanitarian crisis in Lesbos and. Two lines are being followed in order to accomplish the objectives.

On the one hand, they are training refugees in productive upcycling techniques and they are giving them psychosocial support.
On the other hand, they prepare and implement a strategy to carry out the sustainable production project Safe Passage, in which they create and commercialize products made from discarded lifejackets.

This project includes 80 refugees and locals (80% are refugees) who work together and incorporate strategies designed to empower refugees and to promote gender equality along with the acceptance of functional and cultural diversity.

The visit from the two Lesvos Solidarity representatives, Stamatia Kontoleontos and Hrysoula Panousiadou, was part of an agenda based on meetings with solidarity shop managers from various Catalan groups to introduce and promote the products created by Lesvos. Thay have some interviews with the media and they have participated in a round table at Escola Massana untitled How can we contribute to refugee rights through design?
