Mapamundi

On 27 July, the Metropolitan Council approved the first Intetrnationalisation Plan of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, a document that defines the institution's strategy in an international context for the 2021-2025 period.

The Plan responds to the term of the Metropolitan Action Plan (PAM 2019-2023),  which contemplates drawing up an internationalisation plan at a metropolitan scale, aimed towards boosting the AMB's projection abroad, in line with the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the New Urban Agenda (Habitat III), the Paris Agreement on climate change, the Leipzig Charter, the Pact of Amsterdam, the European Green Deal and the defence of human rights, among others.

With this document, the AMB will become one of the first metropolitan governments in the world to have a planning instrument of this nature for a five-year period. The Plan is presented after a consultation process in which over 30 interviews and meetings have been held with about a hundred institutions of the metropolis and abroad: local councils, public and private metropolitan institutions, research centres, think tanks, international networks, technical services of the AMB, etc.

The general objective of the Internationalisation Plan is to boost sustainability, competitiveness, the innovation dimension, the quality and effectiveness of the policies promoted by the AMB and project its assets. This general objective will be deployed through three specific targets:

  1. Impact European and international political agendas with the intention of promoting the interests, needs and expectations of the AMB and metropolitan territory.
  2. Help to transform the productive model and the social and territorial cohesion of the metropolis of Barcelona.
  3. Project an innovative AMB, focused on knowledge, based on values and open to the world.
Once the approval of the Plan has been published in the BOPB (Bulletin of the Province of Barcelona) there will be a 30-day period for putting forward suggestions.
