Sessions on the challenges and opportunities of digital transformation

From January 20th to 21st, 2025, AMB hosted the annual Digital Metropolis Expert Group Meeting (EGM), an event co-organized by AMB and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).
The meeting featured the participation of Jordi Castellana i Gamisans, Vice President of International and Digital Metropolis at AMB.
The main goal of this meeting, held under the theme "Building Inclusive and Sustainable Digital Metropolises", was to establish a network of knowledge and collaboration among experts and institutions to design more equitable and sustainable digital strategies.
People-Centered Digital Solutions
The event brought together metropolitan leaders, policymakers, academics, and experts from around the world to discuss the challenges and opportunities that digital transformation offers to metropolitan areas.
The various panel discussions and interventions placed a strong emphasis on people-centered digital solutions—solutions that promote inclusive cities, by placing the needs and rights of citizens at the heart of metropolitan planning. Key topics addressed during the sessions included algorithmic transparency, ethical data governance, the use of artificial intelligence in decision-making, and digital tools to improve metropolitan services. Best practices and experiences from global metropolises were also shared.
The outcomes of the EGM will contribute to the development of UN-Habitat’s International Guidelines on People-Centered Smart Cities, strengthening the global commitment to an inclusive digital transformation that ensures a better future for all.
