Description

The MAGO project, financed by the European PRIMA programme with 2.5 million euros, has the general objective of connecting research results with the real needs of the market and the demands of the end users for the improvement of food safety and water management in the Mediterranean region facing the challenge of climate change. MAGO will develop WEMED, a collaborative platform with web applications for agriculture in the Mediterranean. Specifically, together with nine other European partners, AMB will develop one of four living laboratories that will carry out the project over the next three years.

The metropolitan living laboratory will serve to promote the use of reclaimed water from the Gavà-Viladecans WWTP in an area that must reconcile the development of agricultural activity with the preservation of a natural area of great environmental interest. For this reason, the Metropolitan Administration will have the collaboration of the El Baix Llobregat Agricultural Park Consortium, together with the agricultural sector and other interested parties, to seek solutions to improve the management of reclaimed water and governance.

Across the Mediterranean region, water management and food security are being affected by a reduction in water availability due to climate change. This situation affects agricultural production and is exacerbated by the increase in population, with the consequent rise in demand for water and food. One of the main difficulties in meeting this challenge is the disconnection between the results of research in this area and the real needs of the market and the demand of end users.
