The AMB takes part in the UN-Habitat expert meeting on metropolitan areas

On 17 and 18 October, UN-Habitat and the Aburrá Valley Metropolitan Area organised a kick-off meeting to begin the process of preparing a report on the overall state of metropolises, which will be presented in October 2020.

This meeting, held in Medellín, was attended by over 40 experts from around the world, including numerous representatives from metropolitan areas such as Montreal, Medellín, Guadalajara, San Salvador, Quito, Bamako, Cairo and Barcelona. The aim of this report is to demonstrate the need to work on a metropolitan scale to address some of the issues that large cities are facing. Some ot the subjects of discussion at the meeting included metropolitan policies, governance, planning and funding.

According to UN-Habitat, by 2050, it is estimated that two-thirds of the world's population will live in urban areas. At present, there are 579 metropolitan areas in the world, which are home to 1.8 billion people, the 45 % of the world's urban population.

The meeting in Medellín concluded with the signing of a declaration by the various representatives.
