Second Workshop of the MEGA project

Debates focus on necessary cooperation and synergies for energy transition

The second workshop of the MEGA project (Metropolis Energy GovernAnce) was held in Montevideo on the week of May 14th to 18th. This project aims to strengthen and innovate governance towards a new energy model in metropolitan cities. MEGA is led by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) with the metropolitan areas of Lyon and Montevideo as partners.

The MEGA proposal was ranked first among the 18 projects from cities around the world that applied to the Metropolis Pilot Projects call 2017-2019, and receives funding from this programme.

Throughout the week in Montevideo, several work meetings, presentations, workshops, peer review sessions and technical visits were carried out, analysing different topics related to metropolitan energy governance. Taking advantage of the fact that Montevideo was the hosting city, participants got to know first-hand the energy revolution that Uruguay has experienced in recent years, becoming a country with 100% renewable electricity and advanced energy policies with a long-term vision. Several representatives of the Ministry of Energy of Montevideo have contextualized this successful transformation, explaining in detail the government plans in the mid-term.

Precisely due to the predominance of Montevideo in the country, the capital has been the focus of the discussions on the necessary cooperation and synergies between the state and local administrations to make a real energy transition possible. Moreover, the partners have exchanged and evaluated the evolution of the MEGA project and the governance strategies of the involved metropolises, emphasizing the need to involve citizens at all possible scales and levels.

The current Mayor of Montevideo, Daniel Martínez, welcomed the participants to his city. The Mayor is a former Minister of Energy in Uruguay, and he reaffirmed the city's commitment to continue with the energy revolution already initiated in the South-American country.

The MEGA project is part of the energy transition strategy of AMB, in particular referring to a strategic vision for a change in the energy model, and with an international relations approach. The next and last workshop will be held in Barcelona at the beginning of 2019.
