Mediterranean cities set out their priorities in the context of international agendas

In Barcelona last Thursday and Friday, 4-5 October, MedCities celebrated its Annual Conference, which had as its theme "Mediterranean cities: sustainable and equitable for all".

Around 40 mayors and other political representatives of cities and metropolitan areas from the Mediterranean region, along with representatives of international organisations, other public administrations and NGOs, addressed the need to integrate the unique perspectives of local governments with international agendas for urban development and the key role played by city-to-city cooperation in confronting shared challenges and disseminating best practices.

The conference was opened by the President of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, Ada Colau, who also participated in a round table with the mayors of Montpellier, Tripoli and Tunis. Alfred Bosch, Vice-President of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona for International Relations and Cooperation, closed the day of debate along with the Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean, Nasser Kamel.

MedCities General Assembly

The meeting was also the occasion for MedCities to hold, on 5 October, its General Assembly, which elected the Board of Directors of the Association for the period 2019-22. Tetouan, represented by the Mayor of Tetouan Mohamed Idaomar, was re-elected to the role of President of MedCities and will be joined on the Board of Directors by As-Salt, Al Fayhaa, Dubrovnik, Larnaka, Izmir, Marseille, the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona and Sfax.
