COOP-VERD begins work

| Subject: International Relations, Waste

This international project promotes local green employment and recycling in Nabeul (Tunisia).

The COOP-VERD project (Cooperation for the optimisation of green work, recycling and waste) approved by Barcelona City Council in December 2016 and coordinated by AMB (as Secretary General of MedCities), the Nabeul City Council (Tunsia) and the Eco-Tourism and Environment Association as local partners, has begun work aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of informal waste collectors, generating green employment and promoting the recycling of waste.

The project, which has been assigned a budget of 110,680 euros (co-financed by the AMB and Barcelona City Council), is currently preparing a preliminary study on the socio-economic conditions of informal waste collectors in Nabeul, a city of nearly 800,000 inhabitants. The study will identify the number of people who work there, their living and working conditions, and the networks in the sector and how they operate, in order to identify needs and possible initiatives with those involved, and to propose a pilot project to be implemented in the coming months.

The COOP-VERD project, which will last one year, is also part of a broader regional and national initiative, the Municipal Alliance for Energy Transition, which aims to foster energy transition measures and implement a pilot project in Nabeul in the field of municipal waste management.
