Waste management in Zarqa

Installation of a mobile transfer station in this Jordanian city

MedCities will evaluate the suitability of installing a mobile transfer station in the area around the city of Zarqa in Jordan. With funding from the Barcelona Metropolitan Area, this Jordanian municipality will receive strong support in its work towards the adoption of actions to increase the efficiency in waste management.

The mobile transfer station will serve for collecting waste transported from the city by small waste collection trucks. This will increase the waste collection capacity and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions thanks to a decrease in the number of daily trips to the landfill.

Training in waste management

The evaluation carried out by MedCities aims to ensure the installation of this station is economically sustainable, environmentally respectful, and it will represent an improvement for citizen's daily life in Zarqa. The project also paves the way for the introduction of future waste separation practices in the municipality.

This will continue the work carried out by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) on training issues in waste management, initiated back in 2018 in collaboration with the Catalan Development Cooperation Fund and MedCities, which helped Mafraq and other Jordanian municipalities through an urban training center.
The municipality of Zarqa has a strong commitment to continue increasing its knowledge on environmental management issues, which is one of the objectives of MedCities: to increase the capacity and empowerment of municipalities for carrying out sustainable actions. To meet the objectives, the project includes several workshops to increase the capacity of environmental technicians in the municipality of Zarqa in conducting environmental impact studies in the future.

This project will contribute to SDGs 3 (Good health and well-being), 11 (Sustainable cities and communities), 17 (Partnership for goals).
