Visit by a delegation from San Salvador

| Subject: International Cooperation

The AMB and three metropolitan city councils are carrying out a coordinated cooperation project in San Salvador metropolitan area

A delegation from the COAMSS/OPAMSS including mayor and two specialists from the metropolitan area of San Salvador, Mesoamerica, carried out a technical visit to the AMB from 5th to 15th November. The delegation participated in various meetings with metropolitan managers in the fields of international cooperation, mobility, public spaces, parks and beaches, and with a special emphasis on waste management. Likewise, they visited several metropolitan waste treatment facilities.

Coordinated cooperation project

The 2018-2019 AMB call for financial funding for metropolitan town councils has incorporated a new type of action: coordinated cooperation, aimed at working closely with the city councils. The identification, technical formulation, monitoring of the execution and justification of the projects work in a coordinated way between the town councils and the AMB Cooperation Area, which provides the necessary technical advice and eases the collaboration of other metropolitan technical services or actors depending on the sectoral scope in which the project is framed.

In the recently approved resolution of this call, the project "Implementation of the comprehensive waste management strategy in the Metropolitan Area of San Salvador. Phase I" was selected. It had been presented by the city councils of El Prat de Llobregat, Viladecans and Gavà, with the Council of Mayors and the Planning Office of the metropolitan area of San Salvador (COAMSS/ OPAMSS), the organization representing two metropolitan municipalities. In its first phase, the project's objective is developing the reduction of plastic waste as an experimental action and promoting viable alternatives in waste management in vulnerable urban areas.

This project is coordinated with a proposal from FCCD focused on developing cooperation and reflection actions linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (ODS) in El Salvador. Several municipalities from the south of the country are working on these actions.

Technical visits

The delegation has also participated together with other representatives from non-metropolitan Salvadoran municipalities in the International Forum on the contributions of the local world to the 2030 agenda between El Salvador and Catalonia. During this meeting, technical meetings and training sessions were held with political representatives and municipal technical teams from the municipalities of El Prat, Viladecans and Gavà, in order to achieve tools and methodologies for the introduction of ODS in the design and implementation of public policies from the local world.

The collaboration between the AMB and the COAMSS/OPAMSS has a long history that has resulted in several direct cooperation agreements in the areas of waste management and public spaces.
