From 11 to 15 November, the city of Durban (South Africa) hosted the World UCLG Congress, in which Mohammed Boudra, president of the Federation of Moroccan Municipalities, was elected president, substituting Parks Tau, who had held the position for the previous three years. Ada Colau, president of the AMB, was named special UCLG envoy to the United Nations.

The AMB, represented by metropolitan councillor and Board of Governors member Elisenda Alamany, also retained its presence in the Executive Bureau. During the UCLG Congress, the AMB organised a side event on public space and took part in the statutory meetings of both the UCLG and Metropolis. Lastly, the AMB collected input from the various metropolitan areas and presented the information to the UCLG World Council.
