Final conference on Climate Metropole+

| Subject: Climate Change, International Relations

Adaptation to climate change is an urgent and cross-sector challenge, main conclusion of the conference

Handling the main challenges to adapt to climate change and the actions developed to face it was the purpose of the final conference of the Climate Metropole+ initiative that was organised today by the AMB Environment Division at the headquarters of the metropolitan administration.

Project conclusions were presented at the conference, as well as future initiatives resulting from exchanging experiences with the metropolitan areas of  Berlin, Liverpool, Lyon and Barcelona. One of the main conclusions was that climate change must be understood from a holistic viewpoint, in which the different environmental, political, economic and cultural issues must all be worked on together. In this regard, adaptation to climate change requires the collaboration of all sectors, in order to focus the problem and outline the optimal solutions from different fields. Some examples of these types of collaborations can be seen at the Metropolitan Observatory on Climate Change of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (METROBS) and in the Lyon observatory.

Likewise, the four workshops held over the course of the project have dealt with how the vulnerability of these urban areas can be reduced: the scarcity of water resources in the Barcelona area, the relevance of the green infrastructure in Liverpool, the prevention of the heat island in Lyon, and energy saving in Berlin, are all concerns shared by all cities that require technical solutions, but also an increase in governance by the involvement of all sectors of society.

Eloi Badia, vice-president in AMB Environment Division, opened the conference by welcoming all participants. On his part, Salvador Milà, from the President's Office, exchanged with the representative from Liverpool their respective metropolitan strategies to adapt to climate change, each at their own development level. Octavi de la Varga, executive director of Metropolis, spoke of the Initiatives programme of Metropolis, from which the Climate Metropole+ project was funded. Ana Romero, head of the AMB Sustainability and Environmental Education Division, debated on the lessons learned from the project with managers from other participating metropolises.

The Climate Metropole+ project was started in June 2015 and will finish in December 2016, after conducting exchanges and generation of knowledge on the different measures and actions to establish policies for adaptation to climate change in the cities, through seminars, workshops and first-hand observation of the actions of the four partners to adapt to climate change.
