Metropolitan Urban Master Plan (PDU) attends the fourth workshop of the SMART-MR project on transit oriented development

On December 11th, 12th and 13th, the fourth SMART-MR project workshop was held in  Kungälv (metropolitan region of Gothenburg), with more than 70 participants. Several workshops have been carried out during this meeting in order to present railway accessibility oriented development proposals.

In the case of the Barcelona metropolitan area, the AMB presented the progress of the Metropolitan Urban Master Plan (PDU), currently under development, where accessibility to rail-bound public transport is a key element to plan future urban developments. The plannings of the northern area of El Prat del Llobregat and La Sagrera railway station surrounded by rail nodes, have been presented as good practices. On the other hand, the development of the Poblenou district 22@ (Barcelona), an example of industrial transformation with a good mix of uses, presents insufficient rail accessibility to new services (offices, universities, housing).

The Swedish partners presented the Ytterby's Master Plan, focused on the development of a urban station community. The presentation included some guided local field trips with the workshop participants and an assessment of different proposals. The final outcomes stressed that the distance between the communities and the railway stations must be based on walkability and cyclability, in order to guarantee a pleasant and practical life.

Exchange of experiences

The purpose of these fourth workshops of the SMART-MR project sessions was to exchange knowledge about the development of communities with a large urban dispersion and public transport, in order to draft recommendations to improve future projects in terms of compactness and territorial accessibility. Also, some experiences have been shared in the field of rail accessibility among the different participating metropolitan regions, highlighting the good and the bad practices of each partner.

Several Swedish, national, regional and local government authorities, including the mayor of Gothenburg, attended the meeting to jointly think about the SMART-MR goal: to develop sustainable and resilient transport solutions in European metropolitan areas.

The next meeting of the project will take place in Helsinki in April 2018, and will deal with low-carbon emission areas.
