European project to mitigate the effects of climate change on the water cycle

From 06 to 09 June, the 20 members of BINGO (Bringing innovation to ongoing water management), from 6 countries –Portugal, Cyprus, Norway, Holland, Germany, and Spain– met in the Norwegian city of Bergen to assess the progress of the project and the extent to which the established objectives have been met.

Badalona is one of six pilot municipalities where the project will be developed. The AMB, through the Directorate of Water Cycle Services, and the City of Badalona, Aigües de Barcelona and Aqualogy have already conducted the first simulations to calculate the effect of major flooding and overflows that may occur as a result of climate change, in order to determine the effects on the environment and to present possible solutions. The next round of activities will incorporate the results obtained from the series designed through 2024.

The BINGO Project, led by the LNEC (National Laboratory of Civil Engineering), in Lisbon, is part of the European program Horizon 2020. It began in 2015 with a total budget of €7,822,425. Its objective was to prepare courses of action in situations of extreme weather generated by climate change –periods of drought, lack of water resources, or large-scale flooding– and to simultaneously propose solutions so that cities may adapt to such challenges in the best way possible.
