The rights of those collectors in the Ciutats Defensores dels Drets Humans (Cities for the Defence of Human Rights) programme

Promote the recognition of the selective collection done by collectors in the city, which is a pending public acknowledgement, has been the main point of the first spring edition of the Ciutat Defensores dels Drets Humans (Cities for the Defence of Human Rights) project held between 9th and 14th of April.

Dimir Viana, a Brazilian activist who has worked with solid waste collectors, is one of the participants in the event. Five other human rights activists from various countries have explained their work in the defence of human rights in various debates and meetings aiming to raise awareness and political commitment.

Cities for the Defence of Human Rights, supported by the AMB, is a programme that aims to show to citizens the challenges of the defenders of human rights stress the importance of defending them, as well as the importance of international supports.

Solid waste collectors and art

Regarding environmental sustainability, it is important to underline the participation of Dimir Viana, a Brazilian activist, educator, actor and musician who expresses his commitment through various artistic expressions, especially the Theatre of the Oppressed.

Among the tasks he has carried out, it is worth highlighting his work with solid waste street collectors. He has promoted the artistic, social and political work of the association of collectors of recyclable materials in Belo Horizonte ASMARE, one of the most important organizations in Brazil in this field.

Its objective is to promote the acknowledgement of the selective collection carried out by collectors in the city, a recognition which is still a pending public subject. It has a great social significance in terms of individual and collective empowerment, dignification of the life and work of the people involved, and the struggle for their labour rights. On the other hand, it highlights this environmental and income creation work.

During his stay in Barcelona, the Brazilian activist, together with the AMB technical team, had the opportunity to share and exchange experiences in this area with Solidança and Alencop organisations.
