The European project for sustainable transport measures in metropolitan areas starts in Ljubljana

Arrenca l'SMART-MR

From 4 to 6 May, the meeting to launch the SMART-MR project, part of the Interreg Europe programme to contribute to the transition to an urban future with low carbon emissions, was held in Ljubljana. Eight large European metropolises, including the AMB, implemented the plan with measures to make metropolitan area transport more resilient, with the aim of obtaining sustainable measures for transport and mobility in cities.

The project – led by Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences amnd Arts (Ljubljana) – has partners in several metropolitan regions: Oslo-Akershus, Helsinki, Göteborg, Budapest, Rome, Porto and the Barcelona Metropolitan Area, from the Sustainable Mobility Services Division and the International Relations Area.

The SMART-MR project is for a five-year period, broken down into two phases: the first for exchanges, learning and writing of action plans and, the second, for their implementation. Throughout the project, seven participative workshops will be held to exchange good practices and to develop the action plans for each of the partner areas. Starting from the improvement in governability and participative planning, the partners will strengthen their cooperation and develop strategies for governing mobility, mobility plans, low impact logistics, transport hubs, low emission areas, transport management and mobility business models.

The AMB will participate in the workshops and will develop a local action plan based on its competences and strategic documents, such as the Metropolitan Urban Mobility Plan. It will also be in charge of organising the final project conference in Barcelona in the last quarter of 2020.

The SMART-MR project will have a total cost of €2,215,566, of which €1,954,409 will be subsidised by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Sustainable mobility and energy efficiency are the core areas of the SMART-MR project and match the areas for transforming the Catalan economy, which were identified both in ECAT 2020 and in RIS3CAT. SMART-MR will also contribute to obtaining the targets in the Pla de l'energia i canvi climàtic de Catalunya 2012-2020 (in Catalan) with the drafting of energetically efficient urban mobility plans, and by promoting sustainable transport. It will follow the lines established in the Pla d'estalvi i eficiència energètica 2011?2020 (in Catalan).
