On 15 September, the third online seminar organised as part of the initiative REthinking Metropolises took place. The main aim of the session was to analyse the impact of COVID-19 on the three participating European metropolitan areas and the changes to mobility and public transport in European metropolises caused as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The main issues under discussion in the seminar were public transport and mobility during the COVID-19 pandemic: which measures have been taken by metropolises to provide safe public transport during the COVID-19 pandemic, how has the pandemic changed people's public transport and mobility habits, in what way is the COVID-19 crisis an opportunity to rethink mobility in general and promote sustainable mobility.

The online seminar was organised by the Katowice Metropolitan Area (Metropolis GZM), with support from the European Metropolitan Authorities (EMA) Network. Participants included José Manuel Ribeiro, mayor of Valongo, Porto Metropolitan Area; Angeliki Stogia, executive member for Environment, Planning and Transport at the Manchester City Council, Greater Manchester; and Olaf Schade, district manager, Ennepe-Ruhr District Authority, Metropolis Ruhr.

The aim of REthinking Metropolises is to foster the exchange of experiences between political representatives from the EMA Network in efforts to find solutions to the new challenges that have emerged as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the life of metropolitan inhabitants and the areas' economies.
