The Guangzhou Award is held every two years. Two editions have been held, in 2012 and 2014, which saw the participation of over 150 initiatives from 50 countries and regions each time, distributed in different categories: infrastructures and public services, participative planning and governance; partnerships; technology; resilience, social inclusion and gender equality.

This prize promotes continued advances in research and the exchange of good practices in urban innovation in cities and local governments to improve local capacities toward the Agenda 2030 for sustainable development, making cities human settlements that are inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. If we bear in mind that in 2030 nearly 60% of the world population will live in urban areas, awards such as Guangzhou take on a deeper meaning.

The Guangzhou Award is organised by the Chinese city of Canton (Guangzhou), Unified Cities & Local Governments (UCLG) and Metropolis (World Association of the Major Metropolises), networks in which the AMB is a member. Recognising the important task of urban innovation in cities and local governments to confront global challenges entailed by their growing densification. .
