WaysTUP! project kick-off meeting

| Subject: Waste Treatment

The AMB participates in the WaysTUP! project, which is funded by the EU through the Horizon 2020 Programme

From 2nd to 3rd of October, the WaysTUP! project (Value chains for disruptive transformation of urban biowaste into biobased products in the city context) kick-off meeting took place in Valencia, referring to integrated systems of innovation in urban waste recovery (H2020-SFS-2018-1), framed within the Horizon 2020 Programme.

It is an innovative project with a total budget of 11,952,090€ (80 % co-financed by the EC) and its duration will be 3 years and a half. The WaysTUP! project main objective is to demonstrate the establishment of new value chains for municipal organic waste that allow the production of high added value bioproducts.

The Waste Management and Prevention Service of the AMB will participate by supplying the feedstock to one of the seven pilot plants that will be built in different European cities. The pilot plant, located in Valencia, will treat part of the metropolitan cellulosic waste through a simultaneous process of saponification and fermentation after acid hydrolysis, in order to obtain bioethanol and biosolvents.

The AMB will receive 257,705.00€ from the WaysTUP! project. The participation in the project will allow to reduce the rejection produced in the AMB mechanic-biological treatment facilities (Ecoparcs), contributing to the circular economy of the metropolitan territory.

The meeting in Valencia had the participation of 27 collaborating entities from 9 member states: Austria, Belgium, Spain, Finland, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, the Czech Republic and Serbia.
