AMB promotes activities related to the Colombian peace agreement

On 29 September, AMB participated in the opening of the seminar Truth, Memory and Reconciliation: Contributions by Colombian Women in the Diaspora, which presented the results obtained in the pilot phase of the Truth, Memory and Reconciliation Commission of Colombian Women in the Diaspora, and various human rights specialists discussed the roles of women in the truth commissions.

The event was organised by Enlace Barcelona - Association of Colombian students in Catalonia as part of the programme of activities in the global citizenship education project Truth, Memory and Reconciliation Commission of Colombian Women in the Diaspora. This series of activities has been subsidised by AMB in the call for grants for international cooperation institutions for 2016-2017.

Presentation of reports and talks by specialists

The event began with the contribution by the activist and social researcher Helga Flamtermesky, who is a specialist in gender and immigration. Flamtermesky presented the results obtained in the pilot phase of the Truth, Memory and Reconciliation Commission of Colombian Women in the Diaspora, a project co-financed by AMB.

The main characteristic of this Commission is its prioritisation of psychosocial healing, women's empowerment and the development of innovative methodologies to make more transformational and sustainable peace processes possible.

Various specialists participated in the event, including Carlos Martín Beristain, a renowned researcher in the field of human rights who has participated in various historical memory processes, and who gave a talk on the role of women in truth commissions. Ingrid Guyon also presented the artistic process linked to the Truth, Memory and Reconciliation Commission of Colombian Women in the Diaspora.

A vast array of initiatives has been implemented by institutions committed to the culture of peace and non-violence since the signing of the peace agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC on 24 November 2016. In this context, various initiatives aimed at memory, truth and reconciliation have been carried out at various points in the conflict and construction of peace, an essential process for the construction of peace and democratic quality in any country. For this reason, AMB considers the promotion of human rights, the culture of peace and non-violence and democratic governance to be an essential part of its international cooperation projects, with various cross-cutting areas, such as gender in this case.

The event took place at Pou de la Figuera Civic Hall in Barcelona, and was supported by the International Catalan Institute for Peace and Conciliation Resources, working together for Peace.
