Innovative solid waste treatment systems of the Life Methamorphosis project

On 24th April, technicians from the AMB visited the UMBRELLA prototype of the Life Methamorphosis project, installed at the municipal waste treatment plant Ecoparc in Montcada i Reixac, on the occasion of its launch.

Specifically, this prototype is built to treat the municipal organic solid waste in order to obtain reusable water and biomethane for vehicles. It optimizes the energy used to treat water from the organic fraction treatment.

Several technicians from the AMB have been informed about this innovative system: first analyses confirm that leachate of solid urban waste is actually a potential source of energy.

UMBRELLA: a prototype of the Life Methamorphosis project

The Life Methamorphosis project, co-financed by the European Commission within the LIFE programme, aims to recover energy from organic solid waste both municipal and agroindustrial, in order to obtain biomethane. This fuel has a lower greenhouse effect gas emission rate compared to other fuels. Furthermore, this initiative is in line with the guidelines about circular economy promoted by the European Union.

The project is being achieved through the industrial-scale demonstration of two innovative treatment systems: the UMBRELLA prototype implemented at the municipal solid waste treatment plant ECOPARC in Montcada i Reixac (Barcelona) and the METHAGRO prototype at the Porgaporcs agro-industrial plant in Vila-sana (Lleida).

The Life Methamorphosis project, in which AMB is a partner, started in July 2015 and is expected to be completed in June 2019, with a total budget of € 3,642,167 and a 60% contribution from the European Commission.
