International experts analyse the socioeconomic impact and uses of new-generation airports in metropolitan areas
On November 30th and December 1st, AMB has hosted the first workshop of the METROAirports Project. During the meeting, experts have analysed and exchanged experiences on the socioeconomic impact that airports have on metropolitan regions. The metropolitan areas of Barcelona, Île-de-France (Paris), Atlanta, and Santiago de Chile with the collaboration of the Barcelona City Council, the El Prat de Llobregat City Council and the Chamber of Commerce have taken part in this exchange, presenting their projects and initiatives. In addition, participants have attended a fieldtrip to the airport city and Barcelona-El Prat Airport facilities to study the uses of the airport zone and how these are connected to the territorial-planning processes.
The METROAirports project is co-financed by Metropolis, the global network of major cities and metropolitan areas. The project will last for three years and will revolve around the economic and social aspects of airports in metropolitan areas, such as their impact on job-creation, economic activity, mobility, access to housing, security, and the relation between the airport's activity and the right to the city.
This project is led by the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona in cooperation with the metropolitan areas of Île-de-France (Paris), Atlanta and Santiago de Chile, and with the European Airport Cities and Regions Association (ARC). The main objective of METROAirports is to improve the design and implementation of metropolitan policies with socioeconomic impact, and city planning linked to airport facilities.
