MedCities participates in the Mediterranean Commission for Sustainable Development of the United Nations Environment Programme, held in Athens

On January 18 and 19, MedCities –whose Secretariat General is held by the AMB– participated in the meeting of the Steering Committee of the  Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development (MCSD). MedCities is member of the MCSD Steering Committee as the representative of local authorities in the Mediterranean during the biennium 2015-17.

MCSD is a commission promoted by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), and its work is currently focused on the implementation of the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development set for the period 2016-2025, This reference document establishes the initiatives and projects to ensure the long-term development of the region.

From its six strategic objectives, MedCities is especially involved in number 3: "Planning and Managing Sustainable Mediterranean Cities" and the resulting initiatives. Together with other actors, MedCities is working to promote the pilot projects of this objective over the coming years.

This Committee emerged from the Barcelona Convention, the international agreement signed in 1976 for the environmental preservation in the Mediterranean. And it is an international recognition of the 25 years of the work of Medicties and the AMB –as Secretariat General of the network– for the sustainable development of the Mediterranean cities, recognizing it as a reference interlocutor for other regional actors as well as for the signatory states of the Barcelona Convention.
