AMB approves the project aimed at improving the Syrian refugee settlements on the outskirts of Tripoli

On December 20, 2016 the AMB Governing Board approved the Emergency campaign project: improvement of the settlements for Syrian refugees (dwellings and basic water supply and sanitation services) on the outskirts of Tripoli (Lebanon).

The project, led by the AMB International Cooperation Service together with the local partner Lebanese Red Cross-Disaster Management Unit, aims at contributing to the full exercise of human rights of Syrian refugees, improving the basic living standards of one of the settlements, the Markabta Camp.

The action, started on December 24, 2016, will help 23 Syrian families (more than 180 people, including young women, children and men) exercise their right to a safe and healthy living space in an informal settlement on the outskirts of Tripoli, while they wait for the end of the Syrian war.

The four lines of work of the project –equip the dwellings with a sanitation system, water supply and a kitchen; access to sanitation (toilets); security and fire prevention systems; and safe recreational areas for children and young people– are implemented through a participatory methodology which includes gender, generational, cultural and disability approaches in order to bolster inclusive processes and the collective empowerment of the refugees. Therefore, refugees are involved in the identification of needs, as well as in the construction and management of the facilities.

The project, with a budget of almost €72,000 and an expected duration of 5 months, intends to provide the basic living conditions at the Syrian refugee settlement, enhance the resilience of the refugees and empower their community.
