Last 16th and 17th of October a technical delegation of the project "Integrated Solid Waste Management in Al Fayhaa – ISWMF", in which the AMB participates with the support of MedCities, visited the Lebanese Host Communities Support Program, an initiative of UNDP Lebanon, for the improvement of municipal waste management and the promotion of recycling in the Urban Community of Al Fayhaa.

The mission consisted of a series of follow-up visits to the key infrastructures of the project, such as the solid waste treatment plant in Tripoli and to the pilot zones of recycling and separate collection of waste. In parallel, there were several meetings between the agents of the Catalan cooperation, UNDP Lebanon, responsible for the coordination of the project, and the Urban Community of Al Fayhaa, institutional counterpart, with the objective of reviewing the studies and strategic plans that will permit to close the current phase of the program, by the end of December 2018, and start the next one.

The project also promoted mobility of knowledge activities, focusing on the revision of the contents of the strategic plan on waste collection and treatment that is currently being defined in the framework of the project; such activities were reinforced with a mission of AMB experts on waste treatment and valorization last October 29th. During the mission, the Catalan delegation also visited the different areas where the pilot projects for selective waste collection are to be implemented and they met with representatives of the civil society that will be involved in awareness-raising activities. If this initiative succeeds, it could be extended to the whole Urban Community of Al-Fayhaa, formed by the municipalities of Tripoli, El Mina, El Bedawi and Qalamoun.

The project Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management in Al Fayhaa is an initiative of coordinated action between some of the main stakeholders of the Catalan cooperation in Lebanon: the Catalan Agency of Development Cooperation, the AMB, the Waste Agency of Catalonia, the Catalan Fund of Development Cooperation, MedCities and the Municipality of Barcelona.
