On October 25th and 26th, the EMA Roma 2018 fourth annual European metropolis forum took place in Rome to discuss the shared challenges of the metropolitan areas, with the aim of creating political dialogue between metropolises and European institutions. In order to discuss, exchange experiences and contribute to the creation of common solutions to the main metropolitan challenges and achieve the recognition of the metropolitan areas as a key players of the European Union to participate in the design, definition and implementation of policies.

The opening session was attended by high-level institutional representatives: Fabio Massimo Castaldo, Vice-President of the European Parliament, Virginia Raggi, President of the Città metropolitana di Roma capitale, Roberto Fico, President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Sergio Costa, Minister of the Italian Environment and Dario Tamburrano, MEP.

The new metropolitan challenges on environment, sustainable mobility, global economy and social policies were the central focus of sessions in which more than 30 European metropolitan areas have participated, such as Grand Paris, Città Metropolitana di Torino, Vienna, Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, Thessaloniki, etc.

Carles Ruiz, Mayor of Viladecans, has attended the meeting representing the AMB. Mr. Ruiz has participated in a debate on the new challenges of the metropolitan areas in the global economy and social policies, together with Virginia Raggi, President of the Metropolitan City of Rome; Arbjan Mazniku, President of Tirana, and Christian Tordo, President of the Metropolis of Nice - Costa d'Azur. The Mayor of Viladecans has stated that the reflect together gives us strength and has explained different projects in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona. The energy trading company and the Smart Cities technology are some examples he used to highlight innovation, the change in productive model, the creation of ecosystems, and citizen participation as key to improve metropolitan governance.

It shall be stressed the signing of the Declaration of Rome, in which the signatories request that the metropolitan plan is included and enhanced in the next budgets of the cohesion funds.
