Dannieh goes cleaner

| Subject: International Cooperation

An action coordinated by Medcities results with 9 tons of waste removed in the north of Lebanon

Dannieh, a north Lebanese Union of Municipalities, launched a campaign of waste collection to raise awareness about the importance of keeping clean roads and streets: This campaign, ended in 2017, was led by the local NGO Youth Dialogue Association YDA, and included cleaning up actions with volunteers. Those volunteers removed about 9 tons of waste and sorted out recyclable materials for further treatment.

Avoid risks on health eliminating waste

The campaign raised awareness about the importance of keeping roads and streets clean in the towns of the Union of Municipalities. Joining forces with scout groups, the NGO placed very visual advertisements along the roads, informative videos and social media, among others, and distributed information to drivers as well as reusable bags to stop the "on the road" dumping of litter.

The aim is to insist on the environmental and socioeconomic risks related to waste, specifically focusing on health. Within the same project, the municipality has been delivered a mechanical road sweeper to increase capacity to deal with the responsibility to keep the roads free of waste.

During the campaign, a meeting between the presidents of Al Fayhaa and Dannieh unions of municipalities was held to address the challenges that municipalities are facing to assure a healthy environment, especially in a context of increasing vulnerable population and related services that must be provided by local governments due to the Syrian refugee crisis.

According to UNHCR, Lebanon hosts close to one million registered Syrian refugees, one fourth of them living in north Lebanon.

The implementation, coordinated by MedCities antenna (KTC) in Al Fayhaa, has been supported by the Union of Municipalities of Dannieh, the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) and the Catalan Agency for Cooperation and Development.
