COOP-VERD Project

| Subject: International Cooperation

It will be implemented in Nabeul (Tunisia) and will promote recycling and green employment

On August 3rd took place in Nabeul (Tunisia) a meeting that ratified the pilot project COOP-VERD that will be carried out in the Neapolis neighbourhood of Nabeul to promote recycling and green employment, and to improve the working conditions of informal waste collectors (chiffonniers). The Barcelona Metropolitan Area coordinates this project in partnership with MedCities, Nabeul City Council and the local association ETE+, with funding from Barcelona City Council.

As part of the project, which is currently under way, Nabeul City Council has already provided a green collection point for plastic in the city centre for ETE+ to facilitate the work of the chiffonniers. This facility includes a press to transform the plastic into compressed bales, in order to enhance its commercial value. Waste collectors taking part in the project will begin to receive social security and medical coverage at work in October 2017; the project also includes appropriate health and safety conditions, including uniforms, vaccination campaigns and training in occupational hazards.

At the same time, work is being done with the residents of the pilot district on a communication campaign to promote separation and recycling at source, which was launched on September 16th.

This project, which ends in December 2017, aims at organising the informal waste collectors as a formal association or company.
